John Wallace

Director Intelligent Systems, John Wallace

John Wallace is the Director Intelligent Systems at Tensar. In this position, John is responsible for providing sensing and monitoring technologies for various types of infrastructure. Previously, John was the Director of Innovation at Emerson Commercial & Residential Solutions.
John has been active in the design and development of electronic control and monitoring systems for more than 30 years and holds several patents related to sensing, control, and monitoring system technologies.
He is a recognized expert in the field of smart buildings and has testified before the U.S. Senate Energy and Natural Resources committee on the impact of smart building technologies on the nation’s infrastructure.
John earned a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from the University of Kentucky and a master’s degree in electrical engineering from the University of Missouri.

The Pop in my Job:
I’ve worked on sensing and monitoring systems my entire career, the bulk of which was spent in the Building Automation industry. I’ve seen first-hand the benefits that can be realized by having sensors in a building which generate data about the operating conditions and how the data can be mined to save energy, lower maintenance costs and create a more pleasant environment for the occupants. Tensar (my current company) provides products and services to the construction industry to make the building and maintenance of roads and other infrastructure more efficient. Today, there is a lack of “real time” data about the current condition of these types of infrastructure. My passion is to add sensing and IoT technologies to roads and other infrastructure making them “Smart” and allowing the asset owners to realize the same benefits that building managers have as they’ve incorporated Sensors and IoT.

Advanced Sensing Technologies and Analysis Techniques for Roadway Construction & Maintenance

CASE STUDY

Monday, March 23

03:00 pm - 03:25 pm

Live in Everett

Less Details

This presentation focuses on the development of cutting-edge sensors and an integrated IoT platform to transform the way we construct, manage, and monitor roadways. With shrinking budgets and expanding responsibilities, owners need better methods to assess the condition of a roadway and determine appropriate maintenance strategies. A new type of sensing technology, combined with advanced data analysis methods enables improved decision-making, proactive maintenance, and enhanced safety.  This presentation will explore the challenges associated with developing the sensing technology able to withstand harsh environmental conditions, how the IoT platform is used to acquire real time data and the how advanced analysis techniques create actionable information from raw sensor data.

  • The challenges of traditional roadway construction & maintenance
  • Advanced technologies (sensing, IoT, etc.) needed to provide data to better understand the condition of roads
  • How sensor data is analyzed to provide insights into the condition and resilience of the roads and potentially lower operating costs
Presentation

How can organizations use AI and data to drive meaningful change, cut through hype, and make smarter decisions?

(3) Manufacturing Cafe

Tuesday, March 24

11:00 am - 03:00 pm

Live in Everett

Less Details

  • How can organizations lower the resistance to process change (“we’ve always done it this way, why change?”)
  • What are the best methods to utilize Machine Learning, Artificial Intelligence and other analysis techniques when using real time sensor data
  • When (and how) does incorporating life cycle cost analysis work versus a focus on first cost?
  • When evaluating new technologies, how do you separate and understand the real value versus the “hype”
  • What (in your opinion) is the most exciting and useful part of AI; Will it change your job? For better or worse?
